Ginger Violet M. Norton, 95, of Lander, died on Monday, May 11, 2015, at the Westward Heights Care Center in Lander. As were her wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held on Friday, June 12, 2015, at 11:00 am at the Lander First United Methodist Church with Reverend Mark Calhoun officiating. A reception will follow the service.
Violet Marion Gustafson was born on June 5, 1919 in Moline, IL the daughter of Claus Peter and Anna Cecilia (Erickson) Gustafson.
She graduated high school in Moline, IL along with her twin sister, Velma in 1937.
On November 5, 1937, she married Edmond Stanley Norton in Ames, Iowa. The couple moved to Lander, WY in April of 1948 to open Landers first veterinary practice.
Throughout her life she was known to be a self-educated person, reading and studying, always learning. Ginger took bookkeeping and accounting classes in order to help her husband with his veterinary clinic. She also worked as a realtor for 15 years.
Ginger was always involved in community activities. She was a leader at the First United Methodist Church in Lander. She served on the Board of Westward Heights before it was opened until she became a resident in July of 2014. Ginger also served on the Lander School Board. She was a member of Cowbells and the Daughters of the Nile. In the Daughters of the Nile Oriental Band, Ginger played a horn. She was also active in the Girls Scouts on a local and state level. She was a long time member of Borners Garden Club and Friends of South Pass.
Ginger and Doc enjoyed camping in their later years and traveling, especially after Doc retired. She also enjoyed playing bridge, needlework, knitting and crocheting. She made lots of afghans for each family member and knitted sweaters for several in her family.
Survivors include her sons, Tom and his wife, Kay Norton of Greeley, CO and Bob and his wife, Nancy Norton of Jackson, WY; daughters, Mary and her husband Bob Danley of Lincoln, NE and Ann Curtis of Jamestown, OH; 15 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, and 3 great great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1985, her parents, her twin sister, Velma Ebner; and her brothers, Harry, Gordon, and twins John and Tom Gustafson.
