Sandra Hittle Barton passed away on November 21,2017 in Riverton, Wyoming, at the age of 58. Sandy was born on May 19, 1959 to Dennis and Judith (Erickson) Hittle in Rock Springs, Wyoming. She attended school in Rock Springs and graduated with honors in 1977. She attended, and graduated from, Utah State University where she was a member of Kappa Delta Sorority. She also earned a master’s degree from the University of Wyoming and was enrolled in a doctoral program at Harvard University.

Sandra moved to Riverton in 1981 where she started an incredible career serving the youth in her community and the State of Wyoming. She taught business and marketing at Riverton High School for 18 years. She served as the DECA sponsor and was the founder of the FBLA chapter at Riverton High. She was named Who’s Who Among American Teachers and was given the Wyoming Outstanding Teacher Award. She was hired as the executive director for the Fremont County Board of Cooperative Education Services in 1999 and continued in this position until the time of her death. In this position, she was instrumental in securing the location of the Wind River Job Corps Center in Riverton. She is credited with providing professional development opportunities throughout the district, starting the “Lights on Program” for Fremont County Youth as well as developing community technology centers throughout the county, and working with community colleges to provide concurrent enrolment opportunities for high school students.

She was appointed to the Wyoming State Board of Education, serving as both the Chair and Vice Chair, by Govenor Fredenthal. She also served on the Wyoming State Board of Vocational Education and the Wyoming Career Readiness Council. She was a graduate of Leadership Wyoming and was awarded the Outstanding Individual Performance Award at the Governors Summit for the Wyoming Workforce Development Council. She also was a recipient of the Wyoming PBS America Graduate Champion in 2014. She served as a member, and vice chair, of the Fremont County School District #25 School Board from 2014 through 2017.

Sandra is survived by her sons Peter J. Barton III and granddaughter Ayva , Travis (Kylee) Barton and grandchildren Tracen and Paislee, mother Judith Erickson (John Church) and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

She is preceded in death by her father, Dennis Hittle, brother, John K. Hittle, aunt, Mary Ellen Erickson, and her paternal and maternal grandparents.

A Celebration of her life will be held on Sunday, Dec 3, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. in the Holiday Inn Riverton Wy. Private family service and burial at Mountain View Cemetery have taken place. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to an educational program of your own choice.
