|Memorial services for Danny Mendes of rural Riverton will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 20, at the Davis Funeral Home of Riverton. Pastor Scott McFarland of Cornerstone Community Church will officiate.
According to his wishes cremation has taken place.
A dinner at the Elks Lodge will follow the service.
Mr. Mendes died Friday morning, Aug. 14, 2009, at the Help for Health Hospice Home in Riverton. He was 61.
Dan Lee Mendes was born in Hanford, Calif., on Jan. 17, 1948, the son of Tony and Jean (Nickell) Mendes. He was graduated from high school in Coalinga, Calif.
On Nov. 15, 1965, he married Janet Winfield in San Joaquin, Calif.
Mr. Mendes was a life-long horse trainer. His family said he also enjoyed leatherwork and made custom saddles.
Mr. Mendes was of the Christian faith.
He was a member of the National Cutting Horse Association, the American Quarter Horse Association, and the National Reined Cutting Horse Association where he was the 1989 world champion.
Survivors include his wife, Janet Mendes of Riverton; his mother, Jean Mendes of Arizona; son, Rick Mendes of Riverton; daughter, Cheri Gonzales of Riverton; grandchildren, Garret Mendes and wife Jessie, Clark Mendes, Samatha Mendes, Darian Gonzales, Tatum Gonzales, and Avery Gonzales, all of Riverton; great grandchild, Syrus Mendes; father- and mother in-law, Darrell and Lennie Winfield of Riverton; a brother, Gary Mendes and wife Julie of Nevada; brother-in-law, Brian Winfield and wife Wendy of Riverton; sisters-in-law, Nancy Eppler, Linda Saunders, Debbie Walters and husband Dave, Darlene Raymond and husband Robert, all of Riverton; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his father, Tony Mendes, and brother-in-law, Billy Eppler.
Memorials may be made to any local Fremont County resident with an illness in memory of Danny Mendes in care of the Davis Funeral Home, 2203 West Main, Riverton, WY 82501.
