A memorial service honoring Candace Widman, 78, will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday December 13, 2025 at Trinity Episcopal Church in Lander, Wyoming. Cremation has taken place.
Candace Patricia Widman was born to Jack L. and Mariam A. (Crandall) Dowdy on September 22, 1947 in Aurora, Colorado, where she was also raised. She earned her Bachelor’s degree from Colorado State Teachers College—later renamed the University of Northern Colorado—in Greeley, Colorado.
Mrs. Widman first worked as a Social Studies teacher in Walden, CO before moving to Wyoming and having her first child. Beginning her career in law enforcement as a police officer in Douglas, Wyoming, serving from 1974 to 1979. She later dedicated over two decades to education within the Department of Corrections, working as a GED teacher and a Drug and Alcohol counselor at both the Wyoming Honor Farm in Riverton and the Wyoming State Penitentiary in Rawlins.
A gifted knitter who also delighted in crocheting, Candace found peace in the rhythm of her handiwork. In her younger years, the outdoors called to her—she spent many happy days hunting, fishing, camping, and nurturing the gardens she loved. A devoted football fan throughout her life, she especially loved cheering for the Denver Broncos. Music was another passion, and she enjoyed playing the piano and singing for much of her life.
She was a member of the Lions Club and a faithful member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Lander.
Survivors include her sons, Mark G. (Deb) Fagan of Texas and Max L. Hawk of Riverton, Wyoming; her daughter, Alicia L. (Bert) Masson of Florida; her sister, Cindy Dowdy of Arizona; and six grandchildren
