Alvin “Al” Jay Witzel passed away Saturday, February 14, 2026, at Wyoming Medical Center in Casper, Wyoming. He was 77 years old.

 

Al was born April 1, 1948, in Sheridan, Wyoming, to Elmer J. Witzel and Lorna Irene (Shedlock) Witzel. He attended elementary and middle school in Ranchester and Dayton, Wyoming, and graduated from Kent High School in Kent, Washington, in 1966.

 

He proudly served his country in the United States Navy. He enlisted in Bremerton, Washington, and served from 1969 to 1971, attaining the rank of Signalman Third Class (SM3). His service earned him the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with device, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with four bronze stars, and the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal for Korea.

 

On December 24, 1998, Al married Rosemary Norsworthy in Riverton, Wyoming. The couple made their home in Pavillion, Wyoming, where Al lived for 45 years.

 

Al worked as a compressor operator for SourceGas, a heavy equipment operator for Atlantic City Mines, an over-the-road semi driver, and later as the owner and operator of Al’s Grading Heavy Equipment. He was known for his strong work ethic and his skill operating heavy machinery.

 

Faith was an important part of Al’s life. He was a sponsor for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, participated in Bible study, and attended Sunday Christian church services.

 

Al enjoyed hunting, shooting, camping, gold panning, and especially spending time with his family. He treasured reloading ammunition with his grandsons and sharing his knowledge and stories with those he loved.

 

He is survived by his wife, Rosemary of the family home; sons Elmer J. Witzel II and wife Sarah; Ronald Craig Norsworthy and wife Julie; Jason James Norsworthy and wife Billie Jo; and daughter Kimberly K. (Norsworthy) Settlemire and husband Rodney; 17 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; and his sister, Linda Paulson and her husband, Rodney Paulson; numerous nieces and nephews.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer J. Witzel and Lorna Irene (Shedlock) Witzel; his first wife, Darla Jean Frein, to whom he was married from 1972 until her death in 1979; and his son, Quentin Joe Witzel, who passed away in 2021.

 

A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, February 28, 2026, at Cornerstone Community Church, 3611 Riverview Road, Riverton, Wyoming with Patty Hessling officiating. United States Navy Funeral Honors will be accorded.

 

A meal and time of fellowship will follow at the Reach Foundation Clubhouse, 622 North 8th West, Riverton. Everyone is invited to join the family at 11:30 a.m., with the meal beginning at 12:00 noon.
