Funeral services for Cardell Sullivan, 60, will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, June 1, 2026 at the Riverton, Church of Christ, 39 Gas Hills Road, Riverton, Wyoming. A Viewing will be held from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m., Sunday, May 31, 2026 at Davis Funeral Home.
Better known simply as “Cardell,” croaked on May 26, 2026, at the age of 60 after a sudden heart attack.
Born November 13, 1965, in Mooreland, Oklahoma, to Diana Jean Sullivan (Martin) & Johnnie Cardell Sullivan, Cardell was a hardworking railroad man, devoted husband & grandpa, grumpy-faced comedian, & unapologetic nerd.
If you knew Cardell, you knew two things immediately: he always looked grumpy, & there was a good chance he was about to say something sarcastic. Beneath the bib overalls & classic railroad engineer exterior was a man who loved deeply, learned endlessly, & never missed an opportunity to tease the people he cared about most.
Cardell married the love of his life, Carey Jolene Tatman, on May 3, 2002. Together they built a life centered around family, laughter, road trips, & simply being together. Whether exploring the Tetons, Yellowstone, Rocky Mountains, or just taking a drive, Cardell’s favorite place was always wherever Carey was.
Of all the titles he held in life, husband & grandpa meant the most to him. He absolutely adored spending time with his granddaughter, Paisley Mae Miska, born December 12, 2025. Becoming a grandpa brought out one of the softest sides of the big, gruff-looking man everyone knew & loved.
Cardell showed love through humor, sarcasm, loyalty, & simply being present. He spent countless hours joking with his kids, sharing random facts from whatever subject had caught his attention, & proudly passing along his endless knowledge of Star Trek & science fiction.
He was the kind of man who could spend hours talking about religion, government, trains, space, science fiction, or whatever new thing had caught his interest that week. If it taught him something, he wanted to read about it.
In his younger years, he loved loud rock & metal music & impressive sound systems, though Carey lovingly teased him over the years for transforming into an “old man” who almost always tuned into talk radio instead of music.
A lifelong fan of video games, sci-fi movies, westerns, & rock hunting, Cardell never really stopped being a curious kid at heart. His family especially loved his nerdy side, even if he tried to hide it behind that permanently grumpy expression.
Cardell worked hard his entire life & genuinely loved working. Before earning his engineer licensing & spending the last 19 years with the Bighorn Divide Wyoming Railroad (BDW), he worked in heating & air conditioning, & spent time doing Rat Hole Drilling in the oilfields, a job he always wished he could go back to someday.
His faith was an important part of his life, faithfully attending Sunday services & weekly Bible study. He was always searching for deeper understanding & connection through his Christian faith.
Over the years, Cardell lived in Oklahoma, New York, & Wyoming, eventually making Riverton his home in 2000.
He is survived by his wife, Carey Sullivan; his children, Tessa Sullivan, Austin Sullivan, John Sullivan, Christopher Sullivan, Haley Myers, & Derek Sullivan; his granddaughter, Paisley Mae Miska; & his brothers, Alan Sullivan, Casey Sullivan, & Patrick Sullivan.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Diana & Johnnie Sullivan.
He may have looked grumpy most of the time, but the people closest to him knew better. Behind the serious face was a man who loved fiercely, laughed often, read constantly, & gave his entire heart to the people & things he cared about most.
And if he could leave everyone with one final distinction, it would be this:
“I didn’t pass away. I croaked.”
