Funeral services for Northern Arapaho tribal Elder John R. Yellowplume, Sr., will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 22, at Wyoming Indian High School at Ethete. Interment will follow at the Yellowcalf Cemetery on the Wind River Reservation. Rosary will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 21, at St. Stephen's Catholic Church. A wake will follow at the family home, 92 17 Mile Road, Ethete. Mr. Yellowplume died Sunday evening, Aug. 17, 2008, at Riverton Memorial Hospital at the age of 54. John Royce Yellowplume, Sr., was born on May 22, 1954, in Lander, the son of Royce Charles Yellowplume and Hattie Elaine (Quiver) Yellowplume. His Arapaho name was Hoko', meaning "Saddle." He attended eight years of elementary school at St. Stephen's Mission, high school at the Riverside Indian School in Anadarko, Okla., and the Spokane (Wash.) Community College, receiving an Associate's degree in heavy equipment. He lived in Spokane for three years and, for the past 30 years, at #92, 17 Mile Road, Ethete. On March 22, 1974, he married Alta Martha Deputee in Lander. Mr. Yellowplume was a member of the Catholic faith. He played with the Ethete Eagle Drum Group and had been drum keeper in the Ethete area for over 20 years. For 24 years, Mr. Yellowplume worked for the Wyoming Indian School District 14 as a teacher assistant. He was also a bus driver for the St. Stephen's Indian Schools. Mr. Yellowplume was president of the Headstart Parent Committee at Ethete. Survivors include his wife, Alta Martha (Deputee) Yellowplume of Ethete; sons, Brent George Yellowplume, Terrance James Yellowplume, Sean Ryan Yellowplume, Kyle Dylan Yellowplume; adopted son, Mac Youngbear; grandparents, John and Cordelia (Eagle Chieftain) Yellowplume; brothers, Cletus R. Yellowplume; sisters, Cordelia Yellowplume, Janice Goggles, Cecelie Armstrong, Jean Yellowbear, and Clarina Yellowplume; mother-in-law, Mary Deputee; aunts, Ruth Goodblanket, Julia Marie Whiteman, Laverne Hutchinson, and Inez Wilson; aunt and uncle, Teresa and Lawrence Wildcat. He was preceded in death by a son, Catfish John Royce Yellowplume III; parents, Royce and Hattie (Quiver) Yellowplume; grandparents, George and Alberta (Welsh) Quiver; an aunt, Charlotte (Quiver) Felter; uncles, Edward Quiver, Hiram Armajo; father-in-law, James Eugene Deputee.
