Funeral Mass for Brenda "Pina" Maldonado of St. Stephen's will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Stephen's Catholic Church. Burial will be at the Sharpnose Cemetery. A rosary will be at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 12, at the church. A second rosary will be recited Thursday, Nov. 13, also at the church with a wake to follow at Eagle Hall and Kile gym. Miss Maldonado died at the Wyoming Medical Center in Casper early Monday morning, Nov. 10, 2008, as the result of injuries suffered in a two-vehicle accident north of Riverton on Sunday, Nov. 9. She was 18 and a senior at St. Stephen's High School. Brenda Maldonado was born in Riverton on May 25, 1990, the daughter of Baltazar Maldonado, Sr., and Eleanor Susan (Brown) Maldonado. She was a member of the Arapaho tribe. She had lived most of her life in Riverton and on the Wind River Reservation, with a brief residency in Aurora, Colo. Miss Maldonado had been baptized into the Catholic and Mormon faiths. In high school, she had received many school awards including Mighty Eagle Fitness Award, Certificate of Excellence in math, Arapaho language, Eagle Power, and Iron Eagle. She was honored as an outstanding student of Native American history, recognized for team spirit in volleyball, and selected to the Five Rivers All-Conference Team in 1A volleyball. She was especially accomplished in track events and received the Wind River High School track fourth place ribbon, competed in the 2007 Brain Drain Race in Lander, regional 1A West girls 200 meter dash 8th place in 2007, regional 1A West girls 100 meter dash 7th place in 2007, regional 1A West girls 300 meter hurdles 5th place in 2007. She also participated in the 2006 Fremont County Shootout on the Lady Eagle basketball team. She volunteered with the Pep grant in activities for Arapaho and St. Stephen's to help supervise youth on field trips. Her family said her favorite colors were the St. Stephen's colors of red and white. In addition to enjoying playing sports, her family said Miss Maldonado enjoyed hanging out with her family and friends, beading and drawing.
