To the Family of Jim Matson,
Jim was the principal during the time our three children attended Jackson School. He was a great principal for our children, and all of them send their condolences. They all are very successful in their careers, and we attribute Jim's great start at Jackson School as part of the reason. He was also a great co-worker, helpful with budget, personnel, and other school issues. Jim was a large part of our community and has left many openings on boards, service, and volunteering. Our sympathy to Maureen, daughters, and grandchildren in the loss of this great man.

Dear Maureen,
Just heard today about the passing of your dear husband. What a wonderful man who did so many different things and was such a positive force. I am thinking of you and send love and prayers.

Judee Oldham - 1/20/2015

I appreciated Jim's friendship. He was "one of a kind", a very special person who liked to help people. He was very fair and never judge mental. When it is all over and people have nothing but good to say about you, you have lived your life right. Jim was one of those kind of people - everyone has something good to say about Jim. In "cowboy terminology", "people like Jim don't run in a bunch!" People with his qualities are far and few between. He has certainly provided a service to this community that will be sadly missed.

I feel honored to have had the opportunity to know Jim and I will miss him.

My condolences to his family.

I will always remember our time spent together serving on the CWC Board of Trustees. I always looked up to Jim for his educational background expertise and his positive straight forward attitude. My condolences to the family.

Our entire family is just heartbroken to hear the sad news about Jim...all three of my children attended Jackson Elementary School and they all just adored Jim...my oldest children worked at RCC all during high school, became closer to him as young adults, and their appreciation and fondness of him rose accordingly...they always had a great "Mr. Matson" story to tell which always ended in laughs...

I had the pleasure of working with Jim professionally and always enjoyed that time with him and appreciated his wit, humor, insight, support, and dedication...I respected him greatly...in the realm of school principals, he was one of the finest, and a true gem...

At the same time, I also had the good fortune to be able to play a lot of golf with Jim over the years...if it's true that golf builds character, it's also true that it reveals character...and it didn't take long to reveal that Jim was indeed a character!...I have so many fond memories of the great times I spent with him on the links, and I will cherish those memories and our friendship always...

Jim was one of my favorite people...

Our thoughts and prayers are with Jim's family during this difficult time...

Matson Family I have so many fond memories of growing up not only in the same town but only one block away from the Matson's. I remember the Gamble Store and the Sporting Goods Store like it was yesterday. I have been blessed to know such good people in my life. Jim will be missed by many.

Jerry Krambeck - 1/22/2015

Hi Matson family, I just learned of Jim's death and I cannot tell you how much I will miss him, one of my closest friends in life. I knew his Mom and Dad, as well as Chuck and Jane. Another dear friend, Martha Clark Brost just called me with the news. Jim and I grew up together from the 6th grade up, played ball together, went hunting and fishing together.
I hope you get this message. I see that the inurnment will be in Spearfish, I am assuming at Rose Hill Cemetery. I am an Episcopal priest living in Spearfish, just 3 blocks from the Matson home. I will put his name and his family members on our prayer list on Sunday. I think the last I saw of the Matsons was on the occasion of a reunion where I saw Chuck and family. I pray you will have some peace after such a loss.
